History of the Russian River Area

A Bit of Russian River & Sonoma County History

Did you know that from 1812 to 1841, Fort Ross—just 24 miles from here—was the southernmost Russian settlement in North America? It was originally set up to supply food for Russian settlements in Alaska and even became California’s first shipbuilding site. Trappers from Fort Ross followed the river inland, which is how the Russian River got its name. Today, Fort Ross is a California State Park open all year round for visitors.

Hike Among the Redwoods or on the Sonoma Coast

Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve

A unique grove of coastal redwoods, is just two miles away. Hiking amidst the 2000-year-old, 250-feet-tall trees is an experience not to be missed. We suggest a pleasant stroll on the forest floor, an activity that is also wheelchair accessible. More challenging trails are available for the energetic, and horseback riding is available in the park as an exceptional alternate way to experience the majestic scenery.

Beach horseback riding is available a short drive away at Chanslor Ranch near Bodega Bay. Other coastal activities include fishing, whale watching and a variety of educational environmental programs provided by the Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods.

The Amgen Tour of California

Sonoma County Is a cyclist’s paradise. Bike riding is a popular activity throughout the year, with roads and trails shaded by our picturesque redwoods and hills. Bike rentals are available nearby. The Amgen Tour of California (a bike race modeled after the Tour de France) is held in February and often follows a route close by the inn.

West Sonoma County has inspired landscape artists and photographers for generations. From vineyards, orchards and manicured gardens to soaring redwoods and rugged seashores, artists have an extraordinary range of landscapes and vistas from which to choose. Three miles downriver in Monte Rio is the Northwood Golf Course, designed in 1928 by noted architect Alister MacKenzie. Golfers enjoy this unique, scenic and challenging golf course, which is open year-round.

Food & Wine in Sonoma County's Wine Country

Festivals, Fairs and Farmers’ Markets

During the summer, towns such as Guerneville, Sebastopol, Healdsburg, Occidental and Bodega Bay host weekly farmers’ markets where the freshest local produce is available. Depending on the market, you may find a variety of food stands serving everything from barbecue to vegan. Local musicians often provide a melodic background of bluegrass, jazz and blues.

Festivals throughout the county celebrate a variety of local foods, such as the Bodega Seafood & Art Festival, the Gravenstein Apple Fair in Sebastopol and the Flavors of Fall in Guerneville. Events such as A Wine & Food Affair and the Russian River Food and Winefest showcase the finest foods and wines of the region.๏ปฟ

Enjoy Wine Tasting in the Russian River Valley Appellation

The soil, topography and climate of this region provide excellent growing conditions for a variety of grapes—most notably the pinot noir, chardonnay and sauvignon blanc varietals. Our skilled winemakers then transform each harvest into world-class wines. The Russian River Valley appellation stretches from Guerneville in the northwest corner, south to Highway 12 and then east of Healdsburg onto the far side of Highway 101. Neighboring appellations include Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley and the Coastal Region. There are wine-related events such as barrel tastings and food pairings throughout the year suited to both seasoned wine lovers and newcomers alike.

Music & Arts in Sonoma County

Theater and Performance

The Wells Fargo Center for the Arts is a venue for a variety of performance acts and is located about a 20-minutes’ drive from the West Sonoma Inn. Close by Monte Rio is home to the energetic Pegasus Theater Company, which produces an inspired repertoire of American and international dramatic works year-round. The Sonoma County Repertory Theater organizes a variety of dramatic events, including the annual Sebastopol Shakespeare Festival each August.

Visual Arts

Every year in June, Art at the Source hosts its Open Studios in the nearby town of Sebastopol. People are encouraged to peruse the studios and take in the art produced by talented local artists. Likewise, artists along the coast showcase their works in the fall during the Sonoma Coast Open Studios Discovery Tour. This event is a free, self-guided tour along scenic Highway 1 that allows you to enjoy the artists’ creations at your own leisurely pace.

In October, Sebastopol is host to an annual sculpture festival called Sculpture Jam. Local artists come together for one weekend to create art pieces that they later install in locations throughout the town. Students, and everyone from youth to seniors, are warmly welcomed and encouraged to participate at this community event.๏ปฟ

Music

Guerneville and communities throughout the surrounding area play host to a number of music festivals throughout the year, including the Russian River Jazz and Blues Festival, which takes place in September. The event draws large crowds, so staking out your place early at Johnson’s Beach is a must.

๏ปฟ
Another noteworthy festival is the annual Rockin’ and Rollin’ on the River, hosted by Korbel Champagne Cellars and located about a mile outside of town. This festival combines food, wine and fun as guests enjoy live rock music. Throughout the summer nearby Rodney Strong Vineyards hosts a similar series of concerts, called the Rodney Strong Summer Concert Series, that also include live music, food and wine.

Another popular Sebastopol music event that draws local music lovers is the High Country Sonoma County Bluegrass and Folk Festival. Each spring talented musicians bring out their fiddles, banjos and other instruments to perform old favorites, as well as new songs for the audience.
